Integrating Chess Classroom Championship

While GM Gata Kamsky and IM Irina Krush were securing their victories in the U.S. Championships and the Women's U.S. Championship this week, my Integrating Chess and Critical Thinking class began their own in-class championship.

Twenty-one students were placed in five groups according to their rating levels.  Each group will play a round robin with the winners placed in a round-robin championship group (each match will include a game as white and a game as black).  All others will compete for subsequent placements according to their initial placement (i.e., all 2nd place winners will be in championship group 2, 3rd place winners in championship group 3, etc.).  In this way, everyone can play lot's of tournament games and earn lot's of class credit.  Remember, this is an elective credit class at WRHS.  Winners of each final group will win a medal and the championship group winner will earn a chess board signed by GM Alex Yermolinsky and FIDE Master Nic Raptis.
