Ruy Lopez Tournament

Ruy Lopez 2010
It turned into a five round Ruy Lopez Blitz Tournament.  Instead of the planned G/10 time controls, we modified it to G/5 so that students could reach the activity bus and debate activities, and still play in the tournament.  As it stands, we lost my daughter to ballet in Round 4.  Adrenaline was high after the first round, as all of us were under time pressure, and then more fun started with popcorn popped in between rounds, hot chocolate, and a ring-pop candy for all after the final round.  Thirteen players competed in this brief and entertaining tournament.

As I expected, very few kids studied or researched the opening.  But, by the end of the tournament students started to grasp the variety of opportunities that the Ruy Lopez opening offers.  We introduced two new students (Real and Colten Weatherly) to chess club by throwing them right into tournament play.  What a great experience for them!  They enjoyed the activity, pace, and camaraderie that our group offers anyone that attends.  We are glad you joined us and hope to see you at many more events.

The night before the tournament, I worked with my kids, showing them some traps and defenses.  None of us got to use them, however.  In the last round, I was pitted against Taylor Walton and he actually studied the same trap I was trying to pull and successfully defended against the Mortimer trap.  Maybe I shouldn't have posted that material on this blog?
